Indonesia’s Energy Transition Challenge – and Ampotech’s Startup Success Story
07/05/2025Indonesia — the largest economy in Southeast Asia — is facing a dual challenge: ensuring energy security while delivering on its commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2060. This presents a major opportunity for green tech startups like Ampotech, a Singapore-based company, to step in and help solve energy efficiency challenges in a nation of more than 270 million people.
The Reality and the Challenges: Data That Speaks
1.Emissions & National Commitment
- According to the Statistical Review of World Energy 2024 published by the Energy Institute, Indonesia’s energy sector emissions reached 701.4 million tons of CO₂ equivalent in 2023. This placed Indonesia as the sixth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases from the energy sector globally in 2023, following China, the United States, India, Russia, and Japan.
- To meet the NZE 2060 target, PLN (Indonesia’s state electricity company) is currently redesigning its Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL). Under the new plan, PLN aims to add 100 GW of electricity capacity by 2040—75% of which (or 75 GW) will come from renewable energy sources.
2. Implementation Gap
However, the target for a 23% renewable energy mix by 2025 was not met. According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), only 14% had been achieved by 2024. As a result, the National Energy Council is considering lowering the target to 17%, adjusting for the latest economic growth assumptions.
3. Investment Flows
- In Indonesia, the financial sector attracted the most investor funding in 2024, amounting to US$324.5 million. Greentech ranked second with investments totaling US$147.6 million (Rp2.4 trillion), followed by the direct-to-consumer, agriculture, and e-commerce sectors.
- Of that, renewable energy (RE) startups received nearly 80%, or US$117.9 million, surpassing electric vehicle startups in total funding.
4. Expanding Infrastructure and Policy Support
In November 2023, PLN inaugurated the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant with a capacity of 192 MWp—the largest floating solar plant in Southeast Asia—reducing CO₂ emissions by 214,000 tons annually
These figures show that Indonesia is entering a fast-moving phase of its energy transition — where technology plays a central role. It is at this pivotal moment that Ampotech steps in.
