Renewable Energy Case Study: How a Solar Developer Centralized Solar Energy Monitoring Across 58 Commercial & Industrial Sites

05/08/2026

As renewable energy adoption accelerates, commercial and industrial solar portfolios are becoming larger and more complex to operate. Managing multiple rooftop solar installations across different locations, inverter brands, and EPC contractors requires more than individual monitoring platforms. Operators need centralized visibility, intelligent analytics, and real-time alerts to maximize asset performance throughout the project lifecycle.

This renewable energy case study explores how Ampotech helped an Energy as a Service (EaaS) provider streamline the operation and maintenance of its growing solar energy portfolio using a unified cloud-based monitoring platform.

About the Client

The client is an Energy as a Service (EaaS) provider specializing in commercial and industrial rooftop solar energy projects.

Its portfolio includes dozens of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems ranging from several hundred kilowatts to multiple megawatts per site. These projects were delivered by multiple EPC contractors and utilize different inverter manufacturers, including Huawei, Sungrow, and Solis.

The Renewable Energy Challenge

As the client’s renewable energy portfolio expanded, managing assets became increasingly complex.

Several operational challenges emerged:

  • Multiple rooftop solar installations across different locations
  • Different inverter brands requiring separate monitoring platforms
  • Multiple EPC contractors using different system configurations
  • Limited centralized visibility across the entire solar energy portfolio
  • Difficulty identifying performance issues quickly
  • Manual monitoring processes for operations teams

Without a unified monitoring solution, maintaining consistent operational performance across dozens of solar energy assets became increasingly difficult.

The Solution: A Centralized Renewable Energy Management Platform

To overcome these challenges, the client selected Ampotech to implement a centralized renewable energy monitoring platform capable of managing its distributed solar energy assets.

The solution was built on AmpoCloud, Ampotech’s Distributed Energy Resource Management platform.

Each rooftop solar site was equipped with one or more Ampotech IoT Gateways, which collected operational data and securely transmitted it to the cloud through 4G connectivity.

The platform consolidated operational data from every site into a single web application, allowing operations teams to remotely monitor asset performance, receive alarms, and access real-time operational information from one centralized dashboard. The solution also integrated solar asset data with the client’s enterprise software through APIs, improving operational workflows across the organization.

Renewable Energy Technologies Implemented

The project included several integrated technologies designed to improve renewable energy asset management:

  • Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERM)
  • AmpoCloud Cloud Platform
  • Industrial IoT Gateways
  • Solar PV Monitoring
  • Remote Asset Monitoring
  • API Integration
  • Multi-brand Inverter Integration
  • Centralized Alarm Management

These technologies enabled the client to manage diverse solar energy assets regardless of equipment manufacturer or EPC provider.

Results

Unified Solar Energy Monitoring

The initial deployment connected 24 commercial and industrial sites, representing approximately 9 MW of installed solar capacity.

Following the project’s success, the client expanded the implementation through a second contract in 2024, adding 29 additional sites and increasing the monitored portfolio to 24.8 MW.

Improved Operational Visibility

By consolidating all solar energy assets into a single platform, the operations team gained complete visibility across the portfolio.

Instead of switching between different vendor portals, operators could:

  • Monitor all sites centrally
  • View real-time operational data
  • Receive automatic alarms
  • Standardize remote monitoring processes

This significantly simplified day-to-day renewable energy operations.

Early Fault Detection

One of the most valuable outcomes occurred shortly after deployment.

The platform detected a faulty power meter at one site that was under-reporting electricity exported to the grid. According to the case study, this issue represented thousands of dollars per month in lost export revenue before it was identified.

The incident demonstrated how continuous monitoring can quickly identify performance issues that may otherwise remain unnoticed.

Greater Operational Efficiency

The centralized platform enabled the client to standardize renewable energy operations across multiple sites while reducing manual intervention.

According to the client:

“Ampotech’s solution has helped us manage our portfolio of commercial & industrial solar sites more efficiently. We have standardised our remote asset monitoring in a unified platform, automated reporting to the power system operator, and reduced our time spent on site by more than 50%.”

Why This Renewable Energy Project Matters

Many renewable energy portfolios grow organically over time.

As additional solar energy projects are added, operators often inherit:

  • Different inverter brands
  • Different EPC contractors
  • Different monitoring systems
  • Separate reporting tools

This fragmentation makes portfolio management increasingly difficult.

The Ampotech implementation demonstrates that renewable energy operators can consolidate distributed solar energy assets into a single intelligent platform without replacing existing infrastructure. Instead of relying on multiple vendor-specific portals, operators gain one centralized view of their entire renewable energy portfolio, improving visibility, operational efficiency, and long-term asset performance.

Key Benefits

Organizations managing commercial and industrial renewable energy assets can benefit from:

  • Centralized solar energy monitoring
  • Multi-brand inverter integration
  • Faster fault detection
  • Automated alarm management
  • Standardized operations
  • Remote asset monitoring
  • API integration with enterprise systems
  • Reduced site visits
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Scalable portfolio management
