Integrating Solar PV and Battery Storage for Off-Grid Energy

As renewable energy developers expand beyond conventional grid-connected solar, integrating solar PV, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and off-grid energy assets creates new operational challenges.

In Indonesia, restrictions on power export to the grid can further increase the need for effective energy management. Solar developers need greater visibility and control over how clean energy is generated, stored, and consumed.

Xurya Daya Indonesia (Xurya), a leading renewable energy company in Indonesia, partnered with Ampotech to expand its capabilities from commercial and industrial rooftop solar into off-grid solar and energy storage solutions.

Ampotech implemented a Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERM) platform to integrate the site’s solar PV and BESS assets, enabling centralised monitoring, remote diagnostics, control, and energy management.

About Xurya

Xurya is a leading renewable energy company in Indonesia focused on expanding the adoption of solar energy.

As Xurya expanded its offering beyond conventional commercial and industrial rooftop solar, the company began developing solutions that combine solar PV, battery energy storage, and off-grid energy systems. This transition requires a more comprehensive approach to managing distributed sustainable energy assets across different operating conditions.

The Challenge: Managing More Complex Renewable Energy Systems

Moving from standalone rooftop solar to integrated solar and battery systems introduces additional operational requirements.

At the Sudamala Resort Seraya in Indonesia, the renewable energy system includes a 295 kWp solar PV system and a battery energy storage system. Managing these assets requires real-time visibility across solar generation, battery operation, and connected equipment. Xurya needed a solution that could:

  • Centrally monitor solar PV and BESS performance
  • Manage battery charging and discharging
  • Identify operational issues remotely
  • Receive alarms and notifications
  • Support energy management for off-grid applications
  • Provide energy data for reporting and billing

Rather than managing individual assets separately, Xurya needed a centralised clean energy management solution capable of connecting multiple energy assets into one operational environment, with the potential to be integrated into Xurya’s existing cloud-based AI automation and operation solutions

The Solution: Integrated Renewable Energy Management

Ampotech deployed its Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERM) platform to integrate and manage the solar PV and battery energy storage assets at the site.

An Ampotech Gateway AGW-500 connects the site’s energy assets and transmits operational data to AmpoCloud, creating a centralised interface for monitoring and managing the renewable energy system.

Solar PV and BESS Integration

The Ampotech solution provides a digital layer between the physical energy assets and the cloud-based energy management platform.

This architecture allows Xurya to access operational information from connected renewable energy assets located practically anywhere in the whole Indonesian archipelago through a centralised platform. Geographically, this spans roughly the size of continental United States.

Key Renewable Energy Management Capabilities

Remote Monitoring and Diagnostics

Xurya can monitor the performance of its solar PV and BESS assets remotely, reducing the need to rely solely on on-site inspection.

The platform also provides visibility into operational conditions, helping teams identify potential issues more quickly.

Battery Charge and Discharge Management

With solar generation and battery storage operating as part of the same system, battery charging and discharging can be managed through the integrated energy management platform.

This provides greater operational control over the use of stored renewable energy.

Alarms and Notifications

The platform provides alarms to help identify abnormal operating conditions and support faster troubleshooting.

Remote Control

Connected assets can be monitored and controlled remotely, giving operators greater visibility and control over the renewable energy system.

Energy and Billing Data

Energy data from the system can be accessed for reporting and billing management, providing a centralised source of operational information.

These capabilities are based on the requirements and solutions described in the Xurya case study.

Transparency and Accountability

Xurya has been providing their clients with a dashboard that will allow them to transparently monitor plant production. This can then be cross-checked against their monthly bills and the on-site meters. With the Ampotech platform, Xurya can provide the same level of transparency and accountability to their off-grid clients.

Results: A Smarter Approach to Renewable Energy

The Ampotech deployment gives Xurya a centralised digital layer for managing off-grid solar and battery energy storage, supporting the company’s expansion into more complex renewable energy systems.

With Ampotech’s renewable energy management platform, Xurya can:

  • Monitor solar PV and BESS assets remotely
  • Manage battery charging and discharging
  • Detect operational issues through alarms and diagnostics
  • Control connected energy assets remotely
  • Access energy data for reporting and billing
  • Scale its energy management capabilities as its renewable energy portfolio expands
  • Transparently and accountably operate the assets

The project demonstrates how digital energy management can help renewable energy developers move from standalone solar PV generation toward integrated and intelligent energy systems.

Building the Future of Renewable Energy in Indonesia

As renewable energy adoption grows, solar developers increasingly need to manage portfolios that combine solar PV, battery storage, and other distributed energy resources.

The Xurya project demonstrates how integrating these assets with a digital energy management platform can provide the visibility, control, and operational capabilities needed for more sophisticated renewable energy systems.

By combining solar generation, energy storage, connected hardware, and cloud-based energy management, Ampotech helps renewable energy companies build a more intelligent infrastructure for the next generation of distributed energy.
